Aden's mom cried in her car as she and her son drove away from his clinical check-up. She had become a pro at masking the tears from her wide-eyed son in the back seat. She smiled softly at him through the rear-view mirror and perfectly masked her voice as she talked to him about how pretty the clouds looked that day. Inside, however, she was silently broken.
Megan wanted to help her son, she wanted to make everything okay. She wanted to fix his constant vomiting, she wanted to help him engage his siblings during play. She wanted to heal his GI problems and social pain. This had been the 5th visit to the clinic. "These are the symptoms of his Autism." the doctor said once again as she talked with them to find an answer as to why he vomited breakfast that morning.
She knew her doctor cared, but how could this simply just be it? She shook her head as she pulled into their home driveway. "No, this can't be the only answer. I can't give up on my son." That night after putting her son to bed, Megan got on her laptop with a mighty quest; that quest was the unsinkable desire to enrich her child Aden's life.
She dove deep, her computer screen gleaming brightly in her tired eyes. Key themes began to unveil themselves over and over again and the pieces began to spin together. Her eyes grew bright as the sight of hope-filled them. She read three specific words out loud as if unwrapping the holy grail, "The second brain." Here is what Megan discovered:
Wikipedia refers to the gut as the second brain of the body through something called the Gut-Brain Axis. The term "gut–brain axis" is occasionally used to refer to the role of the gut flora in the interplay as well, whereas the term "microbiome–gut–brain axis" explicitly includes the role of gut flora in the biochemical signaling events that take place between the GI tract and Central Nervous System. In short, your gut plays a massive part in telling your brain what to do. (Wiki Link)
But what does this have to do with Autism? Studies show Autistic children struggle with multiple GI problems.
Example after example has shown the direct correlation of a healthy or unhealthy gut in correspondence to a healthy mind. When the gut is "cleaned up" of its issues, the mind's clouds begin to dissipate as clarity grows and interpersonal connections increase.
So how does one "clean up" the gut? The lining of the gut must be healed and good gut bacteria must be given lots of love so they can grow strong and perform their jobs well. But before this can occur, the bad stuff must first be removed or the chaos will simply continue. In a metaphor I love, it's similar to updating an old bathroom. In order to put in that new soaker tub, the old leaking pipes first need to be replaced with good ones and the old 1960's tub must be pulled out before the new can be put in its place. It just makes sense, yes? So the same is true with our guts. Toxins must first be cleaned up in order for the gut to have the room to heal. Throwing vitamins down into a nonworking machine will not be effective and they will not be properly absorbed.
But where does one start in all of this? The answer is in HEAVY METAL DETOX.
